A revolt at the Constitutional Court - against the Fidesz-appointed President of the Republic

PM Magyar has announced this afternoon that tomorrow, on Monday, June 22, the government is going to hand in to parliament its proposal to amend the Constitution once again, this time with a view to removing from office President Sulyok and seven other constitutionally independent but heavily Fidesz-friendly top public officials. This is in line with his statement made on June 1, that these people were going to be removed by making one constitutional amendment, and that the whole process will likely take a month or so.Simultaneously, the government is going to inform parliament about its proposal regarding the setting up of a National Wealth Recovery and Protection Bureau, which will undergo a social consultation process before it would be handed in for decision to the National Assembly. Previously, Mr. Magyar said that this bureau would be established by July 1. However, this time he said he hopes the bureau would be actually set up by September only, maybe because its practical establishment is not going as rapidly as previously hoped for, or maybe because they want to wait until the legal reforms required by the EU by end-August, including the extension of the mandate of the EU-initiated Integrity Authority, is completed, as the most urgent task.Also previously, President Sulyok, speaking in his own name but indirectly representing the other 'removable' officials as well, started a campaign to fight the Tisza government's drive to remove him from office.
