Domestic political risk has fallen markedly: Péter Magyar elected for prime minister today

The newly elected National Assembly held its first session today. Péter Magyar was elected for prime minister, the institutional structure of the new government, meaning the list of ministries, is now approved, and the new government cabinet is expected to be up and running by May 12, Tuesday. The EU's official banner has reappeared on the forefront of the House of Parliament after many years of intermission. In his lengthy introductory speech, Mr. Magyar reiterated all the major policy points on the basis of which Tisza was elected, essentially describing their current takeover as a systemic change, rather than just a change of government.This needs to be seen as a major decrease of risk in domestic politics, compared to the predominant view of analysts only a few weeks ago that PM Orbán would be unlikely to step down peacefully even if defeated at the election. Against that prospect, Mr. Orbán appeared on the internet yesterday, introducing his new office in Fidesz' headquarters building, adding that today, he expected to stay in his prime ministerial office up on Castle Hill till noon, and then to move over to the other side of Budapest, continuing work as Fidesz' president in his new office. Mr. Orbán will not be present in the new parliament, the first time he is not there since 1990. Whether or not he is stepping down this way entirely voluntarily or he just did not have the means to resist we do not exactly know. We suspect it may be a mix of the two, but it is now pretty much unimportant.
