After two court decisions interfered with Globo’s presidential debate, combined with Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s (PL) decision to withdraw from the event, Globo canceled what was expected to be the decisive debate of the election campaign. Superior Electoral Court (TSE) Justice Estela Aranha barred the network from showing an empty podium for President Lula (PT). O Globo, in an editorial, stated that “Without Freedom, There Is No Debate.” The piece stressed that “appointed to the position by Lula himself, Justice Estela Aranha created an imbalance in favor of the PT candidate, to the detriment of the other presidential contenders.” The negative backlash surrounding the court decisions is likely to affect the final stretch of the first-round campaign.
