Russian drones in NATO airspace: Hungary unaffected, PM Orbán has taken side with Poland

The violation of Polish airspace by more than a dozen Russian drones (all of which have been intercepted by US and Polish airplanes) during the night did not affect Hungary (see the chart below).PM Orbán has issued a brief statement in the morning: 'Hungary expresses its full solidarity with Poland regarding the drone incident during the night. The violation of Poland's territorial integrity is unacceptable. This case also shows that our policy promoting peace is justified and reasonable. Living in the shadow of war implies risks and dangers. This is why we support President Trump's peace-promoting efforts.'This is very much like Mr. Orbán in general: taking side with Poland but not specifically mentioning the obvious identity of the drones, and hiding behind Mr. Trump difficult-to-read approach the war in Ukraine. However:- Polish and Hungarian are historically two friendly nations. Friendship with the Polish is part a strong cultural heritage in Hungary, forming an important part of the average view of ordinary people in Hungary. The newly elected Polish president, unlike the Polish government, is Mr. Orbán's political ally, despite the fact that he is the same anti-Russian politician as the forces currently on government in Warsaw.- Despite Mr. Orbán's popular description as President Putin's agent or ally at least, Hungary's government closely cooperates with NATO and and EU on defence matters. One fact closely related to today's story is that between August 1 and end-November, a part of Hungary's airforce is on duty to patrol the airspace of the Baltic region, as the leading nation on that mission, together with Italy and Spain.
